Our very own Nick Waltz competed in the qualifying round for the Maine Amateur Championship held at Brunswick Golf Club on June 22. Only 40 of the 119 golfers would advance to the championship. Despite an early tee time for a night owl and a rain soaked course, Nick prevailed, shooting a solid score of 80 thereby hooking one of the coveted spots. He now heads to Auburn’s Martindale Country Club on July 7, 8, where he joins a field of 126 golfers, competing in two days of stroke play. Forty of the 126 will advance to the final round on July 9.
We congratulate Nick and wish him good luck at the tournament. Nick works five days a week at the Wawenock Pro Shop. (Thanks to General Manager, Paul Richmond for this report.)
Men’s Wednesday Morning League
Super Statman, Joe McDermott reports: First low net was won by Jim Adderman and Hal Sutton, who replaced Herb Bartlett for the day. McDermott and Tony Papa came in second and Dan Mocarski and Ian Drewette, third. Bill Fogg was closest to the pin on the third hole, placing his second shot 3 feet 5 inches from the hole.
Jim Spinney and John Hanna combined their skills to achieve low putts with 10. McDermott was closest to the center line on seven with a shot only 18 inches off. After three weeks of play McDermott (There’s that guy again!) and Papa are in first place, Richie Eaton and Dick Marks in second place and Jim Adderman and Herb Bartlett, third. Hopefully our next league outing will be on a dryer course.
The Evening Ladies League
Once again, Monday afternoon was a washout for the Wawenock Evening Ladies League. The usual make-up day of Tuesday was no better. Therefore, the league played a game of Blind Draw, Two Hole Throw Out on June 25. This is a game where the players complete their nine hole round and everything is decided after play. When play is over, the scores of two holes are selected at random to be thrown out from the final score. Then two players who most likely did not play together are also paired up to form a team. After the two hole scores are discarded and handicaps applied, the scores of the two players in each team are added up to determine the winners of the game. The team of Andrea Williams and Kelley House won first place honors with a combined score of 59. The team of Jane Earl and Trudi Snediker took second place honors with a combined score of 62. While many players came close, this was the first week of the season where no player made a chip-in. (Thanks to Trudi Snediker for this report.)
The Women’s Morning League
On June 25, the Women’s AM League was lucky enough to get in nine holes of golf between rain showers. The team game for the day was count the best two balls in the foursome for each hole, using handicaps. The winners with a net score of 75 were Judy DiNucci, Punky Adams, Carol Papa and Scott Brooke. On this day there were no chip-ins. (Thanks to Carol Lindquist for this report.)
It’s all about exact targets
Here’s a good tip from pro, Johnny Johnston. No matter what club is in your hands, always find an exact line of flight. For example, when hitting a driver, don’t just aim for the right side of the fairway. Choose an exact target on the right side of the fairway and focus on it. Why is this important? Because the game is so psychological, it will actually helps the golfer extend the club head at the target when taking the swing. The end result will be a more accurate shot.
