Medomak Valley head cheering coach Rachel Coor was named 2008-09 KVAC Coach of the Year. This is Coor’s first season with the Panthers, though she is no stranger in the league, having co-coached with her mother Mary Sidelinger at Rockland High School.
From 2000-2004, Sidelinger won five KVAC Coach of the Year honors, with her daughter at her side. Coor then coached high school cheering in Denver, Co. for four years.
“It is my first solo one, although I shouldn’t say that because I have a great assistant coach in Heather Simmons,” Coor said of the award. “I am very pleased. It is a huge honor, as other coaches in the league vote on it. It is pretty special to be picked,” Coor added.
Medomak cheerleaders won the coveted Jamie Beth Shible award at the KVAC championships for improving their team scores the most from a year ago. When asked if she thought that was a big factor in her earning the award, Coor said, “I’m sure it was. Coaches vote on how well the kids perform. Their performance is what they see. I’m really proud of the kids, they performed a near perfect routine. I’m sure that had a lot to do with me winning the award,” Coor said of Medomak’s KVAC performance.
Medomak fell three points shy of earning a berth in the State Class B cheering championships. “It is certainly our plan to make states next year. Tumbling is our weakness. The kids know that and are working hard in the off season to get their points up there,” Coor said of their tumbling skills.
