Damariscotta Babe Ruth wrapped up their regular season with just one loss, to Newcastle. The two teams battled it out for eight innings in the Midcoast South championship game on July 8, before Damariscotta scored the winning run. Nat Baptist reached on a bunt single and scored on a Travis Creamer single in the 8th inning for the winning run.
The game was originally scheduled to be played at Great Salt Bay School in Damariscotta, but was moved to Medomak Valley High School earlier in the day on Thursday. The LCN was not notified of the change of venue.
Baptist collected the win (4I,9K,1B,3H,2R) coming on in relief of starter Andy Bartlett (3K,2B,2R,4H) in the 5th. Dalton Leeman started and went seven innings, and Brandon Bonney took the loss for Newcastle.
Newcastle took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd when Casey Poland scored on a passed ball. Brett Cowan scored on a Mitchell Wotton sacrifice in the 4th to put Newcastle up 2-0. Damariscotta got one run back in the 4th when Creamer scored on a Jeff Cheney sacrifice. Newcastle went up 3-1 in the 5th when Dalton Leeman walked and scored on a throwing error.
Bartlett hit a three run homerun in the 6th to give Damariscotta a 4-3 lead. Newcastle tied the game in the top of the 7th when Stephen Quinlan singled in Jared McLain to force extra innings.
Hitting for Damariscotta were Bartlett with a homerun and single, Creamer two singles and Cheney a double. Hitting for Newcastle were Quinlan with two singles, and Bonney, Poland and McLain a single each.
Hitting for the local boys were Shane Butterfield with two doubles, and Oliver, Creamer and Aaron McCullagh with a single each. Hitting for Camden were Berry with a double and single, and Crockett, Hall and Davee a single each.
