Dirigo 10-11 All-stars won their second District 5 Championship title in a row on Sunday defeating Augusta 17-7 in four innings. There are four boys from Lincoln County on the team.
Devin Scherer, Jefferson, got the win pitching 3 1/3 innings with five strikeouts. Augusta got two quick runs in the 1st inning and had the lead going into the 2nd, but Dirigo bats came to life banging out 10 hits and scoring 12 runs to take the wind out of Augusta’s sails.
Dirigo needed to beat Augusta twice to earn the title as Augusta was undefeated in the tournament and Dirigo had fallen to Winslow 5-3 earlier in the tournament.
Sawyer Pinkham, Jefferson, took the win during the first tournament game on Friday night to force a second game going five innings with eight strikeouts to beat Augusta 9-3.
Dirigo had defeated South Lewiston, Elliot, Winslow, and Auburn/Suburban prior to reaching the championship with all four Lincoln County boys making huge contributions to the team.
Pinkham was 4-0 pitching with a .722 batting average, as well as four walks. Scherer was 1-1 pitching with a .714 batting average, with two walks. Jake Rideout, Whitefield, went 1-0 pitching, batting .625 with 3 walks.
Caleb Cummings also of Whitefield, did most of the catching for the tournament, playing great defense and contributing a .400 batting average with five walks.
Dirigo scored the most runs in the tournament and mercy ruled every team scoring double digits in every game except the loss to Winslow and the first win over Augusta.
This same group of boys won the 9-10 District 5 Championship last year. The Dirigo All-star team will be playing in the state tournament this weekend in Cape Elizabeth.
