Lincoln Academy’s Roan Donaghy won the 1600 meter racewalk and Medomak Valley’s Will Rush won the triple jump to repeat as Class B state champions on Saturday, June 1 at Mount Desert High School in Bar Harbor. The Eagles boys team racked up 46 points during the state championship meet to earn fifth place out of the 25 teams competing.
The fifth place finish by the Lincoln Academy boys team is the best showing in a state championship meet since 1973 when the school placed fourth in the Class C championship, according to Eagles head coach Garrett Martin.
A member of the Lincoln Academy boys team also made history at the meet, when Abe Guilford’s discus throw of 144’4” broke the oldest Lincoln Academy track record set by Bill Clark in 1959, Martin said.
Donaghy led the way for the Eagles by winning the 1600 racewalk in a time of 7:14, which set a new school record by 12 seconds. Other top three finishers for the Eagles were E.J. Hunt, who came in second place in the javelin; Peter Thelander, third in the 110m hurdles; and Guilford, third in the discus. Thelander also earned a sixth place finish in the 300m hurdles.
Other Lincoln Academy boys scoring points for the team by placing in the top eight of their respective events were Jordan Anderson, who finished fifth in the 200m; and David Winchenbach, sixth in the 110m hurdles.
The Eagles also scored several points in relay events. The quartet of Owen Card, Nick Russ, Eliot O’Mahoney, and Will Clark placed fifth in the 4x800m relay; Oliver McNamara, Jonas Stepanauskas, Clark, and Thelander earned seventh in the 4x400m relay; and Thelander, Anderson, Bear Grandy, and Mica Houghton placed eighth in the 4x100m relay.
The Panthers boys scored 23 points and placed 15th. Rush accumulated most of the Medomak Valley boys team points by winning the triple jump with a leap of 44’5.5” and by placing second in the long jump. Marshall Addy also scored points for the Panthers boys by earning a fourth place finish in the discus.
Greeley High School won the boys meet with 104 points.
The Lincoln Academy girls scored five points to place 22nd, just ahead of the Medomak Valley Panthers, who scored three points. Greeley High School also won the girls championship, with 93 points.
Jennifer Campbell placed fifth in the high jump to lead the scoring for the Lincoln Academy girls team. Mercy Buchwalder scored a point for the Eagles with her eighth place finish in the 100m dash.
“In addition to point scoring performances, we also recorded nine personal bests, by Delia Saft (100m hurdles), Card (800m and 1600m), Guilford (discus and javelin), Donaghy (1600 racewalk), Clark (800m), Hunt (javelin), and Anderson (200m),” said Martin.
Tallying points for the Panthers girls team were Ella McClean, who earned eighth place in the long jump, and the 4x800m relay team quartet of Ava Collamore, Maggie Bruno, Kaylee Collamore, and Amber Pendleton, who placed seventh.
