Lincoln Academy boys’ tennis team successfully defended their KVAC title in a four and a half hour marathon match at Gardiner May 27. With the score tied at 2-2, the match came down to second singles between Cameron Blake and Brian Jortner.
The two battled for three and a half hours before Blake’s conditioning paid off and he emerged victorious. Blake lost the first set 2-6, then battled back to win 6-3,6-3.
“We almost had to call for darkness. Almost every point was decided by 20-30 stroke rallies. His comeback was unbelievable. All the prepping paid off,” coach Michael Blake said.
The Eagles won the match 3-2 to claim their fourth KVAC title in five years. “It was an amazing finals,” coach Blake said.
Lincoln wraps up their KVAC season with a 12-1 record, with their only loss of the season to Gardiner. Lincoln celebrated their victory by ringing the school bell Tuesday morning.
