The Lincoln Academy baseball team lost their season opener 4-2 to Oceanside on Friday, April 25 in Newcastle. The Eagles fell behind 4-0 in the third inning and could not claw their way back despite scoring a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings.
Blake Grady and Aidan Sanborn belted out the only hits for the Eagles in the contest with a single and double, respectively.
Sanborn (4I, 3H, 4R, 2B, 7K) was the starting pitcher and took the loss. Grady (3I, 1H, 7K) held the Mariners scoreless after he took over in relief of Sanborn at the start of the fifth inning.
Hitting for Oceanside were Blade Brann with a double, Dom Frisone with two singles, and Levi Philbrook with a single.
Pitcher Levi Philbrook earned the win on the mound for Oceanside, giving up just two runs on two hits in 4.1 innings. Philbrook struck out six Eagles and walked three.
Jacob Watkinson threw 2.2 hitless and scoreless innings in relief of Philbrook to help secure the Mariners’ win.
The game was a bit of a reunion for some players, as Sanborn, Brann, Frisone, Watkinson, and Lincoln Academy’s Owen Cotta all played together on the Boothbay 36ers American Legion baseball team last summer.
