The Lincoln Academy boys lacrosse team beat Morse 10-9 in overtime on Monday, April 28 in Newcastle. In the opening minute of the extra session, attackman Isaac Rich sliced through multiple Morse defenders to notch his fourth goal of the game to boost the Eagles to a dramatic victory.
The Eagles blew a three-goal lead in the fourth quarter before escaping with the win, which improved their record to 2-1. Morse dropped to 1-2.
Lincoln Academy led 8-5 early in the fourth quarter before Morse rallied to tie the match with less than two minutes remaining.
Prior to the last minute back-and-forth scoring, the game was prone to huge runs and swings in momentum. Morse built a big lead in the first half by scoring five straight goals to claim a 5-0 advantage before Lincoln Academy went on an eight goal run of its own to earn an 8-5 lead in the third quarter.
“After going down 5-0, the team really came together and started putting together a great defensive effort which translated into some easy goals for us in our offensive end of the field,” said Eagles head coach Tom Farrell. “Our rides became much stronger, and we caused some Morse turnovers to get our offense going.”
The Shipbuilders clawed their way back into the game in the fourth quarter, in part due to sloppy turnovers by the Eagles. After steadily climbing their way back, Morse finally tied the game 8-8 with less than two minutes remaining and appeared to have all the momentum on their side.
With a minute remaining, Rich scooped up a loose ball at the side of the Morse net with one hand on his stick and somehow hurled a one-handed shot that eluded the Morse goaltender to give the Eagles what appeared to be the deciding tally. That tenuous Eagles lead lasted just six seconds, as Morse won the faceoff and sprinted down the field and scored to make it 9-9. Each team had one more opportunity on offense, but the game remained knotted at the end of regulation.
“Our goalie Sean Cushing had an amazing game for us,” said Farrell of his senior goalie, who made 16 saves in the match. “Sean made some big saves in the first half in particular when Morse could have really blown the game wide open. I am so proud of the team for their nonstop hustle and never giving up in the game.”
In addition to Rich’s four goals, Thomas Mickael, Seamus Strout, and Nick Vanderbilt each scored two goals for the Eagles.
Freeport 15 – Lincoln 2
The Lincoln Academy boys lacrosse team lost 15-2 to Freeport on Thursday, April 24 in Newcastle.
Thomas Mickael and William Skiff each scored a goal for the Eagles during the second half. Skiff and Isaac Rich each tallied one assist.
Eagles goalie Sean Cushing made 12 saves in net and allowed nine goals before exiting toward the end of the third quarter due to an injury. Felix Cunningham replaced Cushing between the pipes and made three saves while facing nine shots on goal.
“Felix did an unbelievable job in net after subbing in for Sean,” said Eagles head coach Tom Farrell. “He had a great attitude when faced with playing goalie for the first time ever.”
The Eagles were missing 14 players, including their backup goalie and five starters, due to April break.
“Cole Workman had an outstanding game on the defensive end, limiting Freeport’s middies from dodging and creating chances,” said Farrell. “There was never any quit on the team even after Sean got hurt, and the boys played hard until the final whistle.”
