Lincoln Academy’s baseball team defeated Oak Hill 9-0 on May 11 in the West Class B quarterfinals in Newcastle. The Eagles belted out 11 hits, and threw three pitchers in the shutout win. Ben McLain got the start and the win in three innings of work (3K, 1B, 2H), and Gavin Joannides (3I, 1K, 2B, 0H) and Dalton Leeman (1I, 1K, 0B, 0H) pitched in relief.
After a scoreless 1st inning, Lincoln rattled the Raiders for six runs in the 2nd inning. Joannides drew a lead off walk, Everett Martin singled and Leeman walked to load up the bases for a two run single to Jeff Lamb and RBI double to McLain. Chris Chickering walked to load up the bases for a three run triple to Brandon Reilly.
The Eagles added two runs in the 3rd. Martin hit a leadoff double and scored on an Eric Morgner double. Leeman singled home Morgner. Lincoln scored one run in the 5th, loading up the bases on three straight walks to McLain, Chickering and Reilly, with Joannides driving in a run on an error.
Lincoln tried to win by 10 run mercy ruling in the 6th, when Kyle Scherer hit a double and attempted to score on an infield single to Lamb. Scherer was cut down at the plate.
Hitting for Lincoln were Lamb with three singles, Reilly and Martin a double and single each, Scherer, McLain and Morgner a double each and Leeman a single. Hitting for Oak Hill were Ben Rines and Cody Plourde with a single each.
Plourde took the loss of Oak Hill and Josh Sirois and Rines pitched in relief.
