Leavitt was no match for the Eagles Friday night under the lights in Newcastle. Lincoln Academy crushed Leavitt 7-0 in a lopsided contest that saw the Eagles out shoot their opponents 43-9.
The Eagles took a 5-0 lead at the half, then added two 2nd half goals. Ethan Wajer gave Lincoln the lead less than three minutes into the game when he received a pass from the right wing and worked his foot magic to beat Hornet keeper Jacob Harris.
A minute later Jian Giglia converted a cross from Andrew Feltis on the left wing to put the Eagles up 2-0. Feltis scored the third goal, set up by Nate Riley. Riley dribbled down the left side, dodged several defenders and crossed the ball to Feltis. Wajer scored his second goal of the night with 14:04 to go in the half on a Ryan Wahle throw-in. Giglia made it 5-0 at the half when he collected a pass from Abe Hamilton and dribbled down the field and tee’d up a shot.
Leavitt picked up their defensive intensity in the 2nd half, keeping Lincoln off the boards for the first 27 minutes. Patrick Mullin scored on a nice little cross in the box from Wajer with 12:25 to play. Wajer set up the final goal of the night as well on a through pass to Feltis. Feltis scored with a defender hanging off him with 8:19 to go.
Jacob Harris made 15 saves for Leavitt and Korey Mulherin 9. Kyle Scherer earned the shutout with seven saves, and Merritt Wotton saw no action while in net for the Eagles.
Abe Hamilton gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the half when he collected a failed defensive clear and one timed a shot to the lower right hand corner with four minutes remaining in the frame.
Eight minutes into the second half, Ethan Wajer collected a throw in from Andrew Feltis, dribbled around a defender on the right side and beat Burch inside. Feltis scored “the prettiest goal of the night” with 15 minutes remaining. Feltis collected a rebound off a corner kick and with the outside of his right foot bent a shot around Burch to the upper right corner.
“Ethan Wajer did a good job controlling the midfield and setting the tone for the offense. Andrew Feltis played phenomenal with his intensity and work rate. And Kyle Scherer made some key saves,” coach AJ Anastasio said.
Zach Lennett gave Oak Hill a 1-0 lead with 15 minutes left in the first half when LA’s defense failed to clear the ball on a scramble. Ethan Wajer tied the score with three minutes remaining on a penalty kick. Wajer drew the foul in the box after he was pulled down while turning the corner with the ball.
Oak Hill “played very well, we had a hard time and played out of sync,” Anastasio said. Lincoln “Picked up their intensity in the second half. We were dominating,” Anastasio added.
Oak Hill took advantage of a defensive miscue with 16 minutes to go to score the game winner. “There was a miscommunication on defense and their forward stole the ball, took it in and scored,” Anastasio said of Cody Fortier’s winning goal.
The Eagles had a goal called back at the final buzzer, when it was ruled Pat Mullin’s shot did not cross the goal line before time expired.
“We kept the Soucys from scoring,” Anastasio said of the Raiders top two scorers, including Bryon Soucy, who has scored 10 goals already this season.
Lincoln is 3-1, and Oak Hill is 4-0.
