Eagles Win Patriot League Championship

The Lincoln County Eagles won the Gray New Gloucester YBA Patriot League 7th & 8th grade championship. The Eagles were one of the youngest teams in the league, with four sixth graders (Brie Wajer, Sophie Schumacher, Brianna Genthner, Bailey Plourde), four 7th graders (Olivia York, Alyx York, Lauren Hunt, Isabelle Carlson) and only three 8th graders (Danielle Pinkham, Leslie Sandefur, Taylor Oliver).

The Eagles finished their season with a 12-3 record in the league’s first season. The Patriot League is a new developmental league based in Southern Maine. Trudi Nelson Gillen, a Lincoln Academy graduate and one of the league’s coordinators, said the league has been so successful that eight other teams would like to join, doubling the league’s size to at least 16 teams next year.

The Patriot League playoffs were held over the past two weekends. Results of the playoffs are as follows:

Eagles 36 – Fryeburg 20The Eagles downed Fryeburg 36-20 in the first game of the playoffs. Scoring for Lincoln were Pinkham 9, Plourde 7, Wajer 6, A. York 4, O. York 4 and Schumacher 2.Eagles 29 – Poland 17Eight Eagles scored in their win over Poland in their second game of the tournament, including Oliver 7, Pinkham 6, Schumacher 4, Genthner 4, O. York 2, Wajer 2, Sandefur 2 and Plourde 2.Eagles 38 – Gray NG 33The Eagles topped Gray New Gloucester 38-33 to advance to the finals. Scoring for Lincoln were Sandefur 15, Pinkham 7, Wajer 6, Oliver 4, Schumacher 4 and O. York 2.Eagles 49 – Gray NG 32Lincoln took on Gray NG 8th grade again in the finals, winning 49-32. Sandefur scored 14 and Oliver 13 to lead the Eagles’ charge. Also scoring for Lincoln were A. York 6, Wajer 5, Schumacher 4, Pinkham 2, Carlson 2 and Plourde 1.
