Wiscasset Unsinkables traveled to the University of Maine at Orono March 12 to 15 to compete in the Maine Swimming Winter Combined Championships, sanctioned by USA Swimming. Eight Wiscasset Community Center swimmers hit qualifying marks during the season to qualify for the championship meet.
Two swimmers, Braxton Farrin and Nathan Gilliam, medaled at the championships. Swimmers placing first through eighth receive medals and swimmers placing ninth through 16th receive ribbons.
Braxton Farrin, 12, medaled in two events with personal best times. Farrin placed sixth in the 50 butterfly, shaving 3.74 seconds off his seed time, and seventh in the 100 butterfly, with a 2.38-second improvement over his seed time. Farrin placed 15th in the 100 free.
Nathan Gilliam, 12, medaled in the 100 free, shaving 3.04 seconds off his seed time. Gilliam placed in six other events, taking 13th in the 200 free and 100 back, 14th in the 100 breast and 50 back, 15th in the 50 free, and 16th in the 500 free.
Ellery Downing, 9, placed 15th in the 100 breaststroke for girls.
Benjamin Pugh, 12, placed 12th in the 200 breaststroke and 13th in the 200 back.
Julia West, 17, placed 11th in the 200 breaststroke and 13h in the 100 breaststroke.
Also qualifying were Andrew Nery, Samuel Russ, and Diane Tran.
Wiscasset’s male 12-and-under relay team placed in three events. Andrew Nery, Benjamin Pugh, Braxton Farrin, and Nathan Gilliam medaled in the 200 medley relay, taking seventh with a new Wiscasset Community Center record, and placed 10th in both the 200 free and 400 free relays.
There were 24 swimmers on the Wiscasset Community Center swim team this season, which started the first week in September and ends at Zones late in March.
