Zach Farrin, 13, of Bristol, won the 2014 championship for the 85C and Jr. Mini Class in the Maine Motocross Series. He also won the championship for the 85C class and Jr. Mini class in the Back 40 Motocross Series.
The Bristol Consolidated School seventh-grader has been racing since he was 4 years old. He is the son of Michelle and Gary Farrin.
“He had a pretty good year. He worked hard, he has dedicated himself to it,” Gary Farrin said.
There are 10 races in the Maine Motorcross series and seven in the Back 40, which take up 17 weekends. “We race more than just those 17 races,” Gary Farrin said. “We don’t miss a weekend. We are usually riding right now, but this year we are not going to be, I guess. We will run into the first of October.”
Zach Farrin collected 11 first place and five second place trophies in the two series. Gary estimates his son wins between 21 to 30 first place trophies a year.
“I would like to try to get some other kids to do it. The sport is
expensive. … We used to have 600 members, now when you show up for a race there are only 250 there,” Gary Farrin said. “The numbers have dropped. You have to have a dedicated parent. Just like any other sport. He (Zach) got lucky, because I still ride. I say I’m going to quit when he beats me.”
Z. Farrin is sponsored by a long list of local businesses, including Pat Farrin & Sons Excavation, Farrin’s Boat Shop, KMF Racing, Decal Works, Hancock Lumber, Jon G. Poland Plumbing & Heating, Round Top Ice Cream, Motorbikes Plus, Therriault Performance, Hervochon Construction, Colby & Gale, and family members.
“In addition to the sponsors, we would like to thank all of our friends and family for their support on and off the track and a big thank you to MX207, Hemond’s Moto X Park, and Back40 for hosting races throughout the year. Without them, we couldn’t do what we love,” Michelle Farrin said.
