The CLC YMCA in Damariscotta hosted their fifth annual 120 tennis tournament on Feb. 26. The combined ages in the co-ed doubles tournament had to be at least 120 years young. Merlin Smith and Cathy Eagleson were the oldest team with a combined age of 149 years.
The tournament is just for fun. It is all about getting together to socialize, Faye Cain commented. Participants also brought food to share and put on a beautiful spread.
Teams were divided into three divisions, based on their ability. The Codgers and Geezers were made up of players not on the top of their game, and the Over the Hillers were the best of the best. There were five teams in each division.
Jeff Nichols and Judy Mohr won the Codgers division with a score of 24, Arline Blaxland and Alan Fuller the Geezer division with a 24, and Elizabeth Sylvester and Michael Westcott the Over the Hillers (OTH) division. There was a three way tie in the OTH class, with Sylvester and Westcott winning by drawing straws.
Also participating were Codgers Bob and Faye Cain, Doug Tigert and Coleen Trask, Vic Macomber and Emily Poole and Bill Walton and Louise Bernstone; Geezers Bill and Tracy Babcock, Bill Thomas and Ruth Monsell, Bertha Foote and Don Loprieno, and Cathy Eagleson and Merlin Smith; and OTH Sheila Palmer and Brian Hansen, Dan Seigal and Louise Belknap, and Debby Schling and Jay Morris.
Each team played four matches. Several prizes were handed out, including a $100 gift certificate to Coveside, 10 lobsters, and gift certificates to Do It Best, Olive Garden, ALLPLaY bowling, and Mr. Paperback.
