Medomak Valley seniors Steven Genthner (145) and Trever Neilson (171) won East Class B Regional wrestling titles on Saturday at MCI in Pittsfield.
Genthner broke Randy Simmons’ career win mark (108) in his second match of the day to set a new MVHS record. Genthner has 110 wins as he heads into the State Class B finals.
Genthner won 34 matches this season, including winning 24 by pin. He is undefeated in Class B competition. His four-year career record is 110-48. He went 23-21 his freshman year (100 points) and placed 4th in the Regionals. He was 30-13 his sophomore year (165 points), was 2nd in East B and 4th in State B and 4th in the KVAC.
His junior year he finished with a 34-11 mark (173.5 points) and was 4th in KVAC, 2nd Regionals, 3rd in States, and 3rd in the State All Star – All Class tournament. Genthner joined his older brother Philip this season with a KVAC and Regional title, and so far has a 34-3 record and 199 points.
Neilson (171) has a 17-6 record going into the State championships.
“I’m proud of them. They did an outstanding job all season. Hopefully they can keep it going – we’ll see what happens,” coach Philip Genthner said. “I thought he would be there,” Genthner said of Neilson qualifying for states. For him to win the Regional title, “was a pleasant surprise.”
The Panthers placed 6th overall and had five wrestlers qualify for the State Class B championships, to be held at Medomak on Sat., Feb. 13.
Qualifying for States were Genthner (145), Neilson (171), Stefan Nicholls (3rd at 125), Cheyenne Augustine (4th at 119), and Taylor Olsen (4th 140).
Camden won the East B title with 221.5 points, Belfast 155, Caribou 129, Ellsworth 106.5, MCI 98.5, Medomak 94.5, Old Town 66, Hermon 61, Mt. View 29, Sumner 18, Georges Valley 18, MDI 7, and Central High 3.
Individual results
Cheyenne Augustine (119) pinned Alexis Lodge (Cen), was pinned by Brent Waterman (Bel) in 4:41, then pinned Josh Siva (MDI) to advance to the consolation finals, where she was pinned by Dustin Green (Car) to take 4th place and qualify for States.
Stefan Nicholls (125) lost an 8-4 decision to Tom Cassidy (CH), defeated Jon Gaspie (MDI) by 15-0 tech fall, then beat Josh Devou (Her) to advance to the consolation finals. Nicholls pinned Winston Poole (Bel) in the finals in 2:09 to take 3rd place.
Adam Lynch (135) lost a 6-4 decision to Ryan Botting (Her), won by pin over Kyle Blaisdell (MCI) in 4:33 and was eliminated by Lance Jandreau (Car) by decision.
Taylor Olsen (140) was pinned by Ben Wildes (Ell) in 5:56, pinned Chelsea Johnson (MDI) in 41 seconds, then beat Ethan Fitzjurls (BEL) to advance to the consolation finals. Olsen met up with Wildes again in the finals, and lost a tough 5-4 decision to take 4th place.
Steven Genthner (145) pinned Hunter Tibbetts (MCI) in 37 seconds in the quarterfinals to tie Randy Simmons’ career mark. Genthner then broke Simmons’ record in the semifinals with a pin over Camden’s Neal Harrison in 1:54. Genthner advanced to the finals with the win, and pinned Brandon Burgess of Herman in 1:19 to claim the Regional title.
Trever Neilson (171) pinned William Shepard (MDI) in the quarterfinal in 55 seconds and Anthony Batty (CH) in 1:12 in the semifinals to advance to the championship round. Neilson pinned Patrick Hapworth (MCI) in 3:50 to win the East B Regional title.
Dylan Look (189) was pinned by Brandon Graffam (CH), pinned Trevor Neal (OT) in 3:22, and then was eliminated by fall by Patrick Kidder (Ell).
