Georges Valley rallied for seven runs in the 4th inning to defeat top seeded Newcastle 8-5 in the Midcoast South Babe Ruth championships Friday night at Medomak Valley. Newcastle lost just one game during the regular season, and that also came by Georges Valley.
Dylan Maloney collected the win (9H, 2HP, 1B, 3K). Dalton Leeman took the loss (4I, 7R, 3K, 1B, 6H, 1HP). Brandon Reilly pitched the final three innings (1H, 2K, 1B, 1R).
Newcastle took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning when Stephen Quinlan was hit by a pitch, Leeman singled, Merritt Wotton hit an RBI single and Bo McLain an RBI sacrifice. They added two runs in the 3rd when Reilly doubled and Merritt Wotton smashed a two run homerun.
Georges Valley broke the game open with a seven run 4th inning. Maloney was hit by a pitch, Bryant Mathews doubled and both scored on a Seth Batty double. Blake Anthony walked, Cody Poland hit an RBI fielder’s choice, and Ben Wallace and Nick Judge RBI singles. Philip Atwood hit an RBI sacrifice. GV added a run in the 5th to lead 8-4. Mathews singled and scored when Anthony reached on an error.
Newcastle got a run back in the 5th when Leeman singled and scored on a Merritt Wotton single. Five out of the next 10 batters popped out to the infield, leaving five base runners stranded.
Hitting for Newcastle were Merritt Wotton with a homerun and two singles, Leeman two singles, Reilly a double, Mitchell Wotton, Justin Robbins and Austin Dodge a single each. Hitting for Georges Valley were Mathews a double and single, Batty a double, and A. Wallace, B. Wallace, Nick Judge and Anthony, a single each.
