North Yarmouth Academy (NYA) Varsity Hockey Captain, senior Tom Gildersleeve, of New Harbor, and junior Defenseman Mike Morrison (Hampden) have been selected to the 2010 Northern New England High School All-Star Team. They will join other New England prep school players in Pittsburgh, Penn., on April 13-18 in a showcase tournament against top teams from across the country.
This is the second year in a row NYA players have been recognized and selected for this team. “It is a real testament to Mike and Tom’s commitment. Both have worked through injuries during the season. NYA should be proud to have these two young men represent us at this prestigious tournament,” director of hockey Kent Hulst said.
Formerly called the Chicago Showcase and renamed this year to USA Hockey America’s High School Showcase, the tournament is hosted by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL).
Twenty-four boys’ teams from across the United States representing 43 states will compete and showcase their talents to scouts from every major hockey institution in the country. The event is designed to allow high school hockey players from around the country, who do not traditionally get scouted due to geographic and budgetary constraints within the scouting circles, the opportunity to compete against the best of the best during a five-day period and be seen by every major hockey institution in North America.
Gildersleeve scored 87 points in 62 games for NYA this past season to set a school record in competition in the New England Prep League. Gildersleeve also won a league academic award, and earned the Athletic Council Award.
He is the first ice hockey player to earn the distinction. Gildersleeve will be competing for the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs next season and hopes to play for a Division I program the following year.
