Great Salt Bay School’s baseball team captured their third Busline League championship Tuesday night in Thomaston. The Cougars defeated Troy Howard of Belfast 8-5 for the league title. They also won in 2001 and 2004.
Cold and drizzling rain made for a slippery ball and led to walks and errors from both teams in the championship game.
Gus Hunt (8K,5B,0H,2R) started and went three and third innings before reaching his maximum pitch count. Jason Greenleaf came on in relief to collect the win (5K,1B,2H,3R). Nathaniel Johnson took the loss for Belfast (3I,2H,3K,9B,6R). Max Lewis closed out the game for Belfast (0H,1B,1HP,7K,2R).
GSB loaded up the bases in the first inning on walks to Tiger Cumming, Greenleaf and Hunt. Quincy Perry drove in Cumming to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. GSB added a run in the bottom of the second when Wyatt Poland reached on a fielder’s choice and his pinch runner Jonah Daiute scored on a passed ball.
Troy Howard plated two runs in the top of the third to tie the game. Johnson walked and scored on a passed ball, and Luke Hamlin walked and scored when Dakota Payson reached on an error.
The Cougars took the lead for good with a run in the third. Hunt walked, and scored on a Colby Clark single. GSB opened up an 8-2 lead with five runs in the fourth.
Cumming walked, Greenleaf hit a double and Hunt reached on a dropped third strike to load up the bases for a two run fielder’s choice from Perry. Greenleaf and Hunt scored on an error on Perry’s hit. Perry stole home. Clark was hit by a pitch and scored when Carter reached on an error.
Belfast scored one run in each of the last three innings. In the fifth, Logan Mahoney walked and scored on a Johnson sacrifice. The sixth saw Sam Davis reach on an error and score on an error put in play by Vinnie Bonnaigo. In the seventh, Hamlin hit a double and scored.
Hitting for GSB were Greenleaf a double and Clark a single. Hitting for Belfast were Hamlin a double and Davis a single.
The Damariscotta and Newcastle fire departments, the Damariscotta Police Department and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office welcomed home the team and escorted them through town.

Baseball
Medomak 12 – Nobleboro 2
The Medomak and Nobleboro-Jefferson game, on June 10, ended in the fifth inning due to unsportsmanlike behavior by fans, parents, and athletes. Medomak was ahead 12-2 and will move on to the Busline Southern Division championships.
Nobleboro-Jefferson earned their only two runs in three innings with a hit by Keenan Pitcher and two hits by Dylan Grotton. Medomak scored five runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth, putting Nobleboro-Jefferson in the hole 10-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, the umpire witnessed a player getting struck on the helmet by a parent who was helping with the team and the parent was immediately ejected from the premises.
In the fifth inning, after a Nobleboro-Jefferson player was picked off at second base, the player threw his helmet into the woods, and was ejected from the game. After the ejection, two fans began using profanity directed toward the officials and one was ejected.
The coaches, athletic directors, and officials convened and declared the game over, giving Medomak the 12-2 win.
Travis Wyman collected the win (4 2/3I,9K,3B,5H,2R) and Andrew Pruell the save (1/3I). Pitching for Nobleboro-Jefferson and taking the loss was Ryan Creamer (3I,5K,1B,5H,5R). Damon (4B,R) and Jordan Prentice (2I,0K,3B,3H,6R) pitched in relief.
Hitting for Medomak were Jordan Powell with two doubles and a single, Wyman a double and two singles, Gabe Allaire and Ashton Wilson a double each, and Michael Simmons and Travis Wyman a single each. Hitting for Nobleboro-Jefferson were Grotton with three singles and Pitcher and Zach Tozier with a single each.

Baseball
GSB 5 – Medomak 1
The GSB Cougars defeated the Medomak Riverhawks 5-1 in the South Division Championship game on Friday, June 12.
GSB started strong, earning two runs with a hit by Gus Hunt and a sacrifice fly by Joseph Giberson.
GSB’s defense gave up just one run, which came in the second inning when Travis Wyman scored on a Michael Simmons single.
The Cougars added two runs in the fifth inning on hits from Ben Carter and Jason Greenleaf. GSB added a sixth with a hit by Giberson.
Pitching for GSB and collecting the win was Gus Hunt (6I, 13K, 3B, 1H, 1R) and pitching in relief was Quincy Perry (1I, 1K, 1B, 0H, 0R). Taking the loss was Andrew Pruell (6I, 5K, 2B, 6H, 5R).
Hitting for the Cougars were Hunt with a double and Tiger Cumming, Jason Greenleaf, Ryan Hoffman, Carter, and Giberson with a single each. Hitting for Medomak was Simmons with a single.
The Cougars now advance to the Busline League Championship for the second year in a row.
Softball
Oceanside 3 – Medomak 1
Oceanside softball won the pitcher’s duel on Friday, to beat Medomak 3-1 for the Busline League North Division championship. Chloe Jones collected the win (10K,1B,2H). Addy Jameson took the loss despite a solid effort (10K,3H,5B).
Hope Butler hit an RBI single in the second inning, scoring Callie Grover to give Oceanside a 1-0 lead. They added two runs in the third when Rachel Joyce and Brooke Post drew walks and scored on a Grover single.
Medomak scored their run in the top of the fifth when Lydia Simmons singled and scored on a Jameson sacrifice.
Simmons collected both hits for the Riverhawks, including a triple and single. Hitting for Oceanside were Grover with a double and single, and Butler a single.
Softball
Oceanside 15 – Bristol 1
Bristol lost to a tough Oceanside team 15-1 on Thursday, June 11 during the Busline League South Division championship game.
Collecting the win was Ladd (5I, 8K, 5B, 2H, 1R). Taking the loss was Halle Hallowell (4I, 3K, 6B, 18H, 15R).
Bristol earned their only run when Emily Kelsey scored on a single by Jenna Gilbert.
Oceanside ended the game by a 14-run mercy rule after hitting 18 well-placed balls throughout the game.
Hitting for Bristol were Kelsey and Jenna Gilbert with a single each. Hitting for Oceanside were Gould and Ladd with three singles each, Benner and Foster with a single and double each, Bartlett and Pease with two singles each, and Paulsen, Chickering, Mattiau, and Luckman with a single each.
