The Medomak Valley baseball team dominated Lincoln Academy in an 8-0 victory between the local rivals on Wednesday, April 30 in Newcastle.
Medomak starting pitcher Donnie Havener threw six scoreless innings of two-hit ball to earn the victory, striking out six Eagles while walking one. Josh Blake pitched one inning of hitless and scoreless relief for the Panthers while striking out two and walking one to preserve the shutout win.
The Panthers offense smacked 10 hits in the game, including three singles by second baseman Kristian Schumann (2R, 4RBI, 2SB), who drove in four runs and scored a pair.
Walker Simmons (1R, 1SB) had two hits including a double and Jaydiin Ruiz (1RBI, 1SB) contributed a pair of singles. First baseman Gabe Lash (1R) ripped a triple in the fifth inning that almost cleared the fence in deep right field. Havener (2R) hit a single and Porter Gahagan belted a long double in the seventh inning to account for the other Medomak hits.
Medomak Valley jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning, all of which were unearned runs due to a pair of defensive miscues by the Eagles, who hurt their cause by committing four errors during the game. Schumann knocked in the first two Medomak runs with a clutch single.
The Panthers later tacked on a run in the fifth after the Lash triple and three more in the top of the seventh inning to put the game well out of reach of the Eagles, who struggled at the plate.
Lincoln Academy starting pitcher Aidan Sanborn was pinned with the loss despite striking out 10 Panthers and not issuing any walks in 5.1 innings. He gave up eight hits and five runs, but none of the runs were earned due to team errors.
Sanborn and Ryan Powell each had one single to account for the Eagles hits’ in the game.
The two teams will meet again on Monday, May 19 in Waldoboro.
