Medomak Valley gave undefeated Leavitt a run for their money Saturday night at Cony High School in Augusta in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship match-up. Leavitt out scored the Panthers 41-29 in the second half to pull out a KVAC 65-51 title win.
Lindsay Ranquist scored the opening hoop to give the Panthers their only lead of the ball game. The Hornets jumped out to an 18-9 first quarter lead with a near half court shot from Kristen Anderson to beat the buzzer.
Medomak out scored Leavitt 13-6 in the second period to pull within two, 24-22 at the half. Coach Randy Hooper’s mantra on offense was “relax, relax” and it worked for the Panthers against the speedy and aggressive Hornets. Medomak went on an 11-2 run in the rally. Ranquist scored three hoops, Kasey Benner hit a three and Alanna Vose settled two from the line on a technical foul with 44 seconds to go to cut the lead to two.
The Hornets went up by 15 in the third, before Ericka Christensen scored back to back hoops and Vanessa Davis scored off a Vose steal to cut the lead to nine. Leavitt’s Sarah Frost scored to boost the Hornets lead to 11, 45-34 at quarter’s end.
Leavitt dumped in 20 points in the final period, led by Courtney Anderson with eight, to put the game out of reach of the Panthers.
Scoring for Medomak were Vose 13 (2R,2S,5A), Ranquist 12 (15R,2S), Christensen 8 (11R), Benner 6 (4R,2S,2A), Mallory Conary 5, Nicole Weaver 3 (2R,4S,4A), Vanessa Davis 2, and Kayleigh Beckwith 2. Scoring for Leavitt were C. Anderson 27 (7R,6S), Adrianna Newton 12 (11R,6S), Kristen Anderson 8, Abbey Randall 7 (4S), Sarah Frost 4, Jenna Cote 3 and Amanda Jordan 2.
