Medomak Valley girls’ soccer team is plagued with injuries heading into their season opener at Camden on Sept. 9. Last year’s keeper Ericka Christensen and Nicole Weaver have season ending knee injuries. Senior Roxanne Jelenfy injured her ankle Saturday at the Georges Valley play-day, but is expected to start on Wednesday. Julie Ennamorati and Desiree Leary are also recovering from ankle injuries.
Second year coach Joel Lufkin has most of his team returning, but with the injuries said his team is “still young.”
There are only five upper classmen on the team, including two seniors Kasey Benner and Roxanne Jelenfy, and three juniors Julie Ennamorati, Mallory Conary and Alanna Vose.
The bulk of the team comes from the sophomore class, including McKenzie Belcher, Heidi Obuchon, Jessica Prescott, Maria Ennamorati, Taylor Simmons, Emily Leach, Desiree Benner, Elise Wallace, Danielle Hunt, and Amanda Hendrickson-Belloguet. Freshmen Brooke Benedict and Amanda Young are also on the team. Hendrickson will defend the goal for the Lady Panthers. “I expect to bring some players up from JV,” Lufkin added.
Lufkin said his team is “planning on making the playoffs. It remains to be seen. I hope we do well. They are a good bunch of kids.”
Medomak girls finished their 2009 season with a 10-4 record and were seeded sixth in East Class B. They lost to Old Town in the first round of the playoffs.
Medomak Valley girls open their season on Wed., Sept. 8 at Camden Hills at 3:30 p.m. Their home opener will be Tues., Sept. 10 vs. Oak Hill at 3:30 p.m.
