Jefferson’s Little League team successfully defended their Dirigo Little League title Tuesday night with a 4-3 win over Whitefield in an exciting match-up in Jefferson.
The game was a pitcher’s duel from the start, with Devon Scherer getting the start and Wally Morris the win. The duo combined for 13 strikeouts. Jake Rideout and Caleb Cummings combined for 14 strikeouts in a losing effort.
After two scoreless innings, Whitefield took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Ryan Pederson walked, moved to second when Cody Taylor was hit by a pitch, to third on a passed ball and scored on a throwing error.
Jefferson scored three runs in the 5th inning to take the lead. John Henry singled and Raymond Stevens walked to set up an RBI single to Hunter Williams and a two run single to Sawyer Pinkham.
Whitefield rallied in the top of the 6th for two runs to tie the score. Dylan McMahon hit a lead off single and Rideout reached on a fielder’s choice. McMahon scored on a failed pick-off attempt when Rideout stole second. Jason Campbell was hit by a pitch and Tyler Condon walked to load up the bases for a bases loaded walk to Pederson to tie the score.
Robbie Clark hit a single in the home half of the inning for Jefferson, went to third on a Stevens single and scored on a passed ball for the winning run.
Hitting for Jefferson were Williams with two singles and Pinkham, Clark and Stevens one each. Hitting for Whitefield were McMahon with a triple and single and Caleb Cummings a single.
