The 2010 lacrosse season is only a few months way, and the Damariscotta River Lacrosse Club (DRLC) is looking to sign up this year’s players by the end of March. The team accepts 6th-8th graders, and experience is not necessary.
“We are in our fifth season, and each year the program gets stronger,” said Coach Joss Mohr. “This program and games are geared more toward developing basic skills and team play. It’s a great way for 6th-8th graders, boys and girls, to learn about the ‘fastest game on two feet.’ Quite a few of our players have gone on to play at the high school level.”
DRLC was started in 2005 with the help of an equipment grant from US Lacrosse.
“The club now has about half the equipment it started out with in 2005,” said Coach Mohr. “We need parents of past years’ players to please check to see if they have any helmets, gloves, arm pads, or sticks. By replenishing the equipment stock, the club will be able to offer lacrosse to more players, and hopefully start a full-fledged 5th and 6th grade team.”
“Returning players should bring their equipment, and DRLC will provide the helmets,” he added.
This season, DRLC will have two or three volunteer coaches available in order to accommodate varying work schedules and provide coverage for all practices and games. They will also be teaming up with the YMCA again to make introductory sessions available to 2nd through 4th graders.
Players need not have any lacrosse experience. Interested players’ parents are encouraged to contact Joss Mohr at paddle@tidewater.net or call 650-9380. A preliminary meeting (date, time and place tba) will be held before the end of March. The season runs from April to the end of June.
“This program not only gets players ready to play at the high school level, but it also gives kids a chance to learn about and play a terrific sport,” said Coach Mohr. “2010 is going to be a great year for the Damariscotta Lacrosse Club.”
