With only six upper classmen, the Lady Eagle soccer team is very young this season. Veteran coach John Schumacher is very pleased with the turnout this season, with 35 girls so far coming out for soccer. “I hope to get a few more,” he said.
Of the 35, there are four seniors, two juniors and six sophomores. The rest are all freshmen.
“We’re pretty young out there. I started two freshmen against Cony,” Schumacher said, referring to Danielle Pinkham and Leslie Sandefur in scrimmage action on Friday. “They did well against Cony. We held them scoreless until the last 20 seconds of the game.” Cony won 1-0.
Lincoln Academy graduated eight seniors from last year’s team that went 3-10-1. With a young team this season, Schumacher is stressing skill development in practices. “We’re looking to improve first touches and the quality of our game,” he said.
The Lady Eagles open their season on Fri., Sept. 2 at Oak Hill. Their home opener will be against Leavitt on Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
The varsity roster includes seniors Carly Erskine, Kara Poland, Morgan Scavetta, and Anhui Yost; juniors Becca Hadik and Laura Otterbein; sophomores Lilly Davis, Claire Dumont, Jen Genthner, Amelia Hemingway-Martin, Rachel Hughes, Camille Lazzari, and Katie Riley; and freshmen Danielle Pinkham and Leslie Sandefur.
Sophomore Megan Peabody along with the two freshmen will swing between varsity and JV. Senior Christina Tonry and sophomores Lauren Dole and Sally Gardiner-Smith are awaiting medical clearance to play.
