Lincoln Academy girls soccer team defeated Medomak Valley 2-0 Saturday night in their Homecoming match in Newcastle. The Eagles switched up their line-up to load up on offense, and the strategy paid off in the form of 28 shots and two goals.
The Lady Eagles sported bright pink socks and coach Donavan York a matching shirt for breast cancer awareness.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half. Chelsea Ripley made 12 saves for the Panthers, and Miranda Achorn three for the Eagles in a fast and furious first half. Sammie Griffin was moved back to a fully defensive role early in the half, which helped curb the Eagles’ fire power. Jordan Moore, Hannah Watmough and Amanda Young also came up with big defensive plays in the half.
After being shut out in the first half, and battling for 17 scoreless minutes in the second, the Eagles finally hit pay dirt when Sophie Schumacher converted a Barrett Campbell pass with 23:19 to play.
Maggie Cox had a couple of opportunities to tie the score, but was stopped by Achorn in net for the Eagles. Brie Wajer converted a Leslie Sandefur feed with 37 seconds remaining to give Lincoln a 2-0 win.
Lincoln held a 28-6 advantage in shots. Achorn earned the shutout with six saves. Ripley made 19 saves for the Panthers in a solid outing.
