Lincoln Academy girls basketball team defeated Mt. Ararat and Nokomis at the eighth annual Matthew Budrow Memorial Tournament on Nov. 21 in the Nelson Bailey Gymnasium in Newcastle. All proceeds from the tournament go into the Budrow Scholarship fund.
In their first game of the tournament, the Lady Eagles clipped Mt. Ararat 56-23. Showing an overpowering defense, Lincoln only gave up seven baskets from the floor the entire game.
Lincoln jumped out to a 13-2 first quarter lead, and extended it to 26-13 at the half, then outscored Mt. Ararat 30-10 in the second half in the landslide win.
Kaitlyn Feltis went out with a knee injury. Coach Kevin Feltis hopes she will be able to return in the latter part of the season.
Eleven players scored for the Eagles. Senior Samantha Burke led with 11, Avae Traina added 8, Brie Wajer 7, Dorothy Hodous 7, Brianna Genthner 5, Alyx York 4, Kaitlyn Feltis 4, Cagney O’Brien 4, Chloe Hallowell 3, and Julianna Lafrenaye and Olivia York 2 each.
Scoring for the visitors were Lauren Sturgess 5, Sabrina Paetow 5, Taylor Wiencowski 4, Katelyn Cox 3, and Lauren Labbay, Sara Lamb, and Kate Guerin 2 each.
Burke left the game early with a foot injury.
Scoring for Lincoln were A. York 12, Hodous 10, Wajer 10, Traina 6, Genthner 4, Hallowell 3, and Lafrenaye and O’Brien 2 each. Scoring for Nokomis were Gabby Lord 8, Sidney Moore 7, Olivia Brown 6, Austin Taylor 5, Chelsea Crockett 4, Maci Leali 4, Hanna Meservey 2, and Shayla Kelley 1.
Scoring for Lincoln were Riley Cushing 19, Cole Leeman 17 (3-3s), Cody Tozier 17, Nate Masters 6, and Kobe Lincoln, Keyden Leeman, and Taylor Holmes 2 each. Scoring for Mt. Ararat were Ulrickson 31 (14/15 foul line), Bolduc 11 (7/8 foul line), LaFountain 9, Segars 8, Mello 6, Guerin 4, and Moutal and Cox 2 each.
Nokomis tied the game 44-44 late in the third quarter. Taylor Holmes hit a foul shot and Kobe Lincoln scored off his own steal at the buzzer to give Lincoln a three point advantage, 47-44 going into the final period.
Nate Masters found Cole Leeman open twice beyond the arc at the start of the fourth to put the Eagles up nine. Nokomis cut the lead to to seven, before Leeman hit another three to give Lincoln a 10 point lead.
Brad Allen hit a three for Nokomis, before Masters scored on a Leeman feed, and Cody Tozier drove inside for a three point play at the line to give the Eagles a 12 point lead with four minutes to play.
Nokomis made the game interesting with their physical play cutting the lead to five. Lincoln sank six of 12 foul shots in the final minute and a half to seal the win.
Scoring for Lincoln were C. Leeman 19 (5R,2A,4S), Cushing 12 (2R,3A), Lincoln 11 (3R,4A,3A), Tozier 8 (6R), Masters 8, Keyden Leeman 6 (3R), and Holmes 4 (6R). Masters had four assists.
Scoring for Nokomis were Alex Chipman 12, Mike Massow 11, Allen 11, Zach Harlagrave 10, Ethyn Butler 7, Alex Baird 3, Josh Smedstad 2, Josh Perry 2, and Matt Leferd, Kodey Ramsdell, and Cody Walker 1 each.
