The Wells-Hussey American Legion Post 42 reclaimed the Lincoln Little League championship with a 5-0 win over Masters Machine in Nobleboro Saturday. The Legions, who won in 2009, lost the 2010 title to Nobleboro Village Store.
The Legions finished the season with just one loss, and that came from Masters, setting up an exciting rematch for the Lincoln LL crown.
Baker Gove went the distance in the shutout win on Saturday, striking out 12, walking none and giving up just three hits. Brett McLain took the loss with a great outing on Masters’ mound (11K, 3H, 2B) and Austin Pooler pitched one-third of an inning (1K, 1B) in relief.
The game was completed in record time, lasting just an hour and 10 minutes in the pitchers’ duel.
The Legions scored two runs in the 1st inning. Chris Sullivan reached on an error, and Sean Sullivan singled. Chris scored on a sacrifice grounder from Gove, and Sean came home on a passed ball.
McLain shut the Legions down over the next three innings. The Legions rallied for three runs in the bottom of the 5th. Bradley Cross and C. Sullivan walked and S. Sullivan singled and all came home on passed balls.
Hitting for the Legions were S. Sullivan with 2 singles, and Cross a single. Hitting for Masters were Nick Griffin a double, and Nathan Simmons and Austin Pooler a single each.
At an awards ceremony after the game, the Legions presented awards, voted on by the team and coaches. The Most Improved Award went to Andrew Greenleaf; the Sportsmanship Award to Baker Gove and Riley Cushing; and the Most Valuable Player award to Gove.
