Lincoln Academy’s boys soccer team shelled MCI’s net with 18 first half shots, then upped the pressure in the second half, blitzing the Huskies net with an additional 25 shots. Add seven overtime attempts, and the Eagles out shot MCI 50-6, but still came up empty, settling for a 0-0 tie on Oct. 8 under the lights in Newcastle. Many of Lincoln’s shots missed high, wide, or bounced off the cross bar or post. MCI keeper Casey Edgerton made 28 acrobatic saves to earn the shutout.
Lincoln looked to score in second half action, and the accompanying photo shows the ball clearly over the end line, but the goal was not seen and Edgerton cleared it away.
The Eagles completely dominated every facet of the game, but in the end the score didn’t reflect the game on the field, and Lincoln had to settle for a scoreless tie.
First half action saw Dan Bradford, Nate Riley and Ben McLain hold off the Huskies in the Eagles’ defensive end. MCI managed three shots, all easily corralled by Eagle keeper Kyle Scherer.
The defensive trio of the first half, along with Michael Vanderploeg held off MCI in the second frame. MCI’s Hojun Lee broke free, but Scherer stopped his open shot to preserve the shutout. With under five minutes to play, Brad Russell rang a shot off the cross bar, Ethan’s Wajer’s header was saved, Bradford and Pat Mullin just missed at the corner, and with one second to play, Wajer’s blast was stopped by Edgeton.
Lincoln came up empty on four shots in the first OT and three shots in the second OT, as Edgerton was solid in the Huskies net with five saves.
