Lincoln Academy boys’ soccer team picked up wins over Rockland and Leavitt this week, and tied Oak Hill to improve their record to 2-1-1.
Lincoln broke the scoring ice 14 minutes into the second half on a shot from Brandon Bonney. Jacob Maxmin set up the goal when he put a “lot of pressure on the defense and caused the turnover. It was good hard work by Maxmin,” Anastasio said of the goal.
Less than a minute later, Bonney set up the second goal with a cross from the right side to Kyle O’Brien at the left corner.
Leavitt pulled within one on a penalty kick with four minutes remaining. Kyle Scherer stopped the first PK, but the Hornets were given a second when it was ruled Scherer left the line too soon. Korey Mulherin made good on the second attempt.
Jeff Cheney netted the third Eagle goal with one second left in the game when he lofted in a high shot under the cross bar from 30 yards out.
Lincoln held a 15-13 advantage in shots. Scherer made six stops in net for the Eagles.
Jamiel Kidd converted a Ben Daggett feed 11 minutes into the game to give Oak Hill the lead. Lincoln tied the game 10 minutes later on a “great goal.” Jackson Cromwell crossed the ball from the right side and hit Eagle teammate Jacob Barrows for the tying goal. Dalton Burns took advantage of a Lincoln defensive miscue with eight minutes to go in the half to give Oak Hill a 2-1 lead at the half.
Bo McLain tied the game 17 minutes into the second half when he stole the ball from a Raider defender and scored from about 18 yards out.
“We dominated both overtimes and had several point blank shots that their goalie came up big on,” Anastasio said.
Lincoln held a 20-15 advantage in shots. Scherer made four saves for the Eagles, and Tyler Pelletier eight for the Raiders.
“Kyle O’Brien is playing very well on the outside. He has really stepped up his game. His key goal against Leavitt has solidified his play,” Anastasio said.
Rockland used their kick and run offense to their advantage in the second half, taking a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the half on a breakaway shot from Conor Pfister.
Lincoln tied the game 20 seconds later when Bo McLain collected a Jacob Bonney cross off a defender and put it past Tiger keeper Nate Boggs. Jacob Barrows scored the game winner with 11:14 remaining on a cross from Ryan Wahle on the right wing. Josh Cross took advantage of a defensive miscue when Boggs called for a ball and a Tiger defender stopped it. Cross picked up the rebound and fired it into the back of the net for the Eagles’ third goal of the night.
Sam Stone, Ryan Wahle and Nic Phinney played solid defense for the Eagles. Kyle Scherer stopped seven Tiger shots, and Boggs 18 Eagle shots. Lincoln held a 24-13 advantage in shots.
