Lincoln Academy boys’ soccer team opened their KVAC season with a 1-0 win over Winslow Friday under the lights in Newcastle. The Eagles held a 34-15 advantage in shots.
Kyle Scherer made 13 saves in net for Lincoln to earn the shutout win. He was backed up by the big three on defense, Ben McLain, Nate Riley and Michael Vanderploeg.
Lincoln scored in the first half on a breakaway through pass from Jacob Bonney. Bonney found Ethan Wajer deep on the left wing. Wajer ran onto the pass, beat a Black Raider defender and shot past keeper MacKenzie Michaud low and inside the near post.
Winslow’s Finn Ducker tee’d up a shot, but bounced it off the cross bar in the Raiders final shot of the half.
Lincoln pounded the Raider net in second half action for 23 shots, but were unable to punch a shot past the athletic Michaud in net for Winslow. Twice in the half, the Eagles got off a flurry of shots in the box, the first coming on a corner kick that saw Lincoln head the ball on net three times, the second on a wild scramble that saw Michaud dive to block a shot, and get up and stop another shot. The Eagles kept up a burning intensity for the entire 80 minutes of the game.
Scherer earned the shutout 12 minutes into the second frame when he stopped a rocket from point blank range.
“I was pleased with their intensity. Winslow came out and played hard, and we had to come out and match them. Kyle (Scherer) made some key saves. I was pleased offensively with the number of shots,” coach KJ Anastasio said.
