The Bath Family YMCA capped off a successful winter swim season by capturing the YMCA State Swimming Championship held Feb. 28-March 1 and the Maine U.S. Swimming Winter Championships held March 5-8 at the University of Maine, Orono.
Six Lincoln County swimmers were members of the Bath Family YMCA’s Long Reach Swim Club for the 2009/10 swim season. All of them had great regular season swims and were contributors to the overall success of the team, and four qualified for New England competitions, including Heidi Ziegra, Kara Mullin, Bradford Tibbetts, and Petra Janney.
The Bath YMCA’s Long Reach Swim Club captured its 19th straight YMCA State Swimming Championship with the win this year and 21st under Coach Jay Morrisette. The team had won the Summer Championship held in St John’s, New Brunswick at the Canadian Aquatic Centre back in July. The winter championship season win is the second in three years.
Heidi Ziegra, Boothbay, won the 50-free and was second in the 100 free and 200 free for 11&12 girls at the State Y meet; and was second in the 400 free, second 200 medley relay, second 400 medley relay, second 200 free relay, 6th in the 200 fly, 9th in 200 breast, 10th 100 free, 12th 200 free, and 13th in 50 free at the US Winter Championships for 13&14 girls. She will represent the team at the YMCA New England Regional Championships to be held at Harvard University on March 22.
Kara Mullin, New Harbor, placed fourth in the 200 medley relay, ninth in the 100-butterfly and 13th in 100-back in the Y States for 13 and 14 girls; and placed third in the 200-medley relay, 400-free relay, 400-medley relay and 200-free relay, eighth in 1650-free, 15th in 400-IM, ninth in 200 butterfly, ninth 500-free, ninth 1000-free, and 12th 100-back at the U.S. Winter Championships for 13 and 14 girls. She will be representing the team at the YMCA New England Regional Championships at Boston University March 21.
Hope Logan, Boothbay Harbor, won the 11 and 12 girls’ 100-IM and 50-fly and was second in the 50-back at Y States;
Bradford Tibbetts, Boothbay Harbor, placed fourth in 50-breast, 10th in 100-IM and 11th in 100-free in Y States for 9 and 10 boys; and placed ninth in 200-fly and 10th in 200-back at the U.S. Winter Championships for 11 and 12 boys. He will represent the team at the YMCA New England Regional Championships at Harvard University on March 22.
Evelyn Tibbetts, Boothbay Harbor, registered personal best times in the 200-free, 50-free and 100-back at Y States for 13 and 14 girls.
Petra Janney, Edgecomb, swam on the winning 200-medley relay, was second in 100-fly and fifth in 100-back at Y States for 15 and older girls. She will represent the team at YMCA New England Regional Championships at Boston University March 21 and the YMCA National Championships on April 4-7 in Florida.
