Bayley Pendleton scored the game winning goal by way of a penalty stroke with 44 seconds left in double overtime, to give a jubilant Lincoln Academy field hockey team their first varsity win since 2006. The dramatic 2-1 victory came in the team’s KVAC opener against the Morse Shipbuilders.
The Shipbuilders struck first when Kaylee Walker poked the ball past Lincoln goalie Andrea Call early in the first half. Lady Eagle Abby Farrin’s well-struck shot found its way around Morse goalie Madeline Baker with 31 seconds left in the first half to tie the score at one goal apiece.
The second half was a defensive battle for both teams. With neither team producing a goal, the game headed into overtime. During overtime, both teams’ benches were electric to try to propel their team to victory. The teams were entrenched in a stalemate until well into the second overtime period.
A penalty stroke was awarded Lincoln Academy after Morse goalie Bryanna Ringrose went after Lincoln’s player instead of the ball on a breakaway. This set the stage for Pendleton’s game winning penalty stroke.
Call was solid in goal, totaling 13 saves in the game for the Lady Eagles. Baker had three saves, and Ringrose one for the Shipbuilders.
“It was just incredible. Last year we came close a few times. That was just the most amazing thing. The kids went nuts. It was one of the most fulfilling things. I am so happy for the kids and their families,” co-coach Mary Martha Collins said.
Maranacook 3 – Lincoln 0
Missing two hard hitting forwards, the Eagles struggled on offense on Monday at Maranacook, falling 3-0. The two teams battled for 45 scoreless minutes, before the Black Bears exploded for three goals in the final 15 minutes of play.
Maranacook held a 23-1 edge in shots. Eagle keeper Andrea Call made 20 saves. “She did an incredible job,” Collins said.
