Lincoln Academy girls soccer team battled through double overtime twice this week and settled for ties with Medomak Valley and Erskine Academy.
Lincoln 1 – Medomak 1
Medomak Valley girls soccer team played their best game of the season at Lincoln Academy’s Homecoming and walked away with a 1-1 double overtime tie Saturday night.
“They came to play. We started out OK, then went flat,” Eagles coach Donovan York said.
“We did nothing different. We played more aggressively and with a lot of intensity. In the past we played one good half, either the first or the second. We put it together tonight,” Medomak coach Larry Jensen said. “I am just tickled to death with how they played. They deserved it.”
The Panthers came into the game with just one win (one tie, 4 losses) and were hungry for heal points from the 6-1 Eagles.
Lincoln jumped out to a quick lead less than three minutes into the game when Ashley Mason converted a cross from Sophie Schumacher, to score her first career goal. Eagle defender Alyx York left the game after a hard collision with Alika McMurrin and did not return
Medomak picked up their intensity in the second half after Sophie Cohen tied the game on a penalty kick and called for a hand ball with 29:17 remaining. Both teams posted seven shots in the second half, and both keepers stood their ground. Miranda Achorn rejected five Panther shots in the frame, and Chelsea Ripley seven Eagle offerings.
Medomak looked to take the lead with 12 minutes to play when a Jane Vonnoy shot hit the back of the net, but the goal was called back for offsides.
Brie Wajer stopped a Panther breakaway from Ashlee Wilson with five and a half minutes to play, and Ripley stopped a Mason shot with 4:20 to go and a Chloe Hallowell attempt with two minutes to play. Vannoy broke free with less than a minute to play, but Achorn was there to make the stop and send the game into overtime.
Lincoln outshot Medomak 4-1 in two overtime periods. Alyssa Smith stopped Medomak on a breakaway, and Lady Eagles Mason’s header missed wide in the first OT.
Olivia York missed high, and wide in the second overtime.
Lincoln held an 18-10 advantage in shots. Achorn made eight saves for the Eagles, and Ripley 13 for the Panthers.
Lincoln 2 – Erskine 2
The battle of the Lady Eagles ended in a stalemate Tuesday night under the lights in Newcastle. Lincoln wasted no time getting on the boards after Erskine was called for a hand ball in the penalty area just 54 seconds into the game. Sophie Schumacher beat Erskine keeper Cassie Ray low and to the left to give the LA Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Erskine rallied with superb passing to take a 2-1 lead by the half. Christina Belanger broke free for Erskine and was blocked by a sliding save from LA keeper Miranda Achorn. Belanger pushed the rebound to the right to a wide open Mallory Chamberlain for the tying goal with 27:33 to go.
The Blue Eagles took the lead with 17 minutes to go in the half when Belanger scored on a nice cross from Kaylee Porter.
After playing flat the first half, Lincoln came out on fire in the second, and held a 9-4 advantage in shots. Their pressure paid off with 13:30 to go on a Schumacher corner kick. The kick bounced off Ray’s hands, before Leslie Sandefur drove it home to tie the game and force double overtime.
Both teams had a chance to win in the closing minutes of regulation.
Achorn made a sliding save to stop Belanger on a breakaway, and Ray made a diving save on a Lincoln shot.
Lincoln held a 2-1 edge in shots in the first overtime, with Schumacher missing high and Ashley Mason offer being stopped by Ray. On the other end of the field Belanger missed high.
In the second overtime, a Schumacher corner kick ended in a mad scramble that was cleared by the defense. A second LA Eagle shot hit the side of the net.
After the game, coaches gave out awards to one player on the opposing team (Erskine Academy tradition). The award went to Mason and Belanger.
“It was exactly what we expected, a hard fought match. We dominated the second half. I was very pleased. We kept them in check,” coach Donovan York said of Erskine’s offensive efforts.
Lincoln held a 20-13 edge in shots. Achorn made eight saves for Lincoln, and Ray eight for Erskine.
Morse 5 – Medomak 0
Morse girls soccer shut out Medomak 5-0 Tuesday under the lights in Bath. The Shipbuilders were led by Brianna Williams and Lauren Pelletier with two goals each and Miracle Trimble 1.
“We were very undermanned,” coach Larry Jensen said of his team that had three injured starters, and others out with grade trouble. Chelsea Ripley made 9 saves for Medomak, and Alecia Achorn three for Morse.
“Jordan Moore and Sophie Cohen played well. They were very steady for me. We played well the first 20 minutes of the second half, until they scored their third goal,” Jensen said.
