Medomak Valley girls’ cross country team competed in their fourth straight State Class B Cross Country championships on Oct. 30 in Belfast. The weather was cool and overcast, but the course was in great shape considering the rain that fell in the week prior to the championship race. Old Town’s Dacie Manio won the race by a landslide in 18:50, and John Bapst beat out Cape Elizabeth for the team title 72-78.
Lady Panther Gwen Moiles missed the Class B top 20 by one spot, taking 21st in 20:38. Megan Wyllie placed 42nd for the Panthers in 21:32, followed by 75. Heidi Harris, 22:30; 77. Alyssa Griggs, 22:37; 78. Jocelyn Thames, 22:38; 92. Jordan Hopkins, 23:37; and 96. Shannon Staples, 23:57.
Four of Medomak Valley’s seven runners ran slower times that the Regional meet, held on the same Troy Howard Middle School course the week before. Harris, Hopkins and Staples ran faster times.
Lincoln Academy’s Hannah Fake placed 56th in 21:55. Fake’s time was nearly a minute faster that her time three weeks earlier at the Festival of Champions in Belfast.
Washburn’s Carsyn Koch won the State C girls’ race in 19:36, and Merriconeag-Waldorf beat out Waynflete (46-52) for the State C girls’ title.
The State Class C boys’ race was won by Madison’s Matthew McClintock. Boothbay’s Chase Brown and McClintock battled for the lead in the first mile, with McClintock passing on the S-turn bridge around the one-mile mark. McClintock went on to win in 16:00 and Brown was second in 16:14.
Boothbay (115) placed fifth, behind NYA 60, Freeport 99, Wayneflete 105, and Monmouth 112. Nate Schwehm ran to a top 10 finish, taking ninth in 17:12. Also running for the Seahawks were 32. Tom Brown, 18:21; 35. Alex Owen, 18:26; 67. Dan Murray, 19:49; 60. Cameron White, 19:39; and 84. Stephen Barter, 20:42.
