The Maine State Girls Wrestling Championships were held at Massabesic Middle School in East Waterboro on Saturday, March 14. Six local wrestlers from Lincoln Academy, Medomak Valley, and Erskine Academy competed in the championship meet.
Lincoln Academy seniors Miranda and Morgan Achorn placed second, as did Medomak’s Ellery Micklich in the intermediate division (primary school). Medomak Valley’s Rayanne Leach and Erskine Academy’s Michaela Sprague, of Jefferson, placed third.
Lincoln Academy placed third with 28 points. Massabesic won the school girl state championship with 52 points, followed by Oceanside 36, Lincoln 28, Marshwood 18, Bonney Eagle 17, Erskine Academy 15, Windham 14, and Mt. View 14. Maine Trappers was the top club with 74 points, and Passamaquoddy Lynx was second with 18.
The girls state championship used to be a yearly event, but has not been held in a couple of years. There was interest to resurrect the tradition this year, so it was held in conjunction with a junior high wrestling meet. The two tournaments were run together with three shared mats.
Medals were awarded to the top four wrestlers in each class.
