Six Waldoboro area youth who advanced from the Waldoboro Pitch, Hit & Run competition competed at the Sectional Level of Major League Baseball’s Pitch Hit & Run competition at the ballpark in Old Orchard Beach on May 18.
The Pitch, Hit & Run competition is a free baseball and softball skills challenge that allows youngsters to showcase their talents in pitching, hitting, and running with scores determined by individual performances in each skills event. Five of the six Waldoboro area children finished in the top spots.
Grace White, of Waldoboro, won the girls 9 to 10 age division with 641 points. Jordan Powell, of Friendship, won the 11 to 12 division with 1,059 points. Addie Jameson won the girls 11 to 12 division with 1,031 points. Cassie Smeltzer, of Waldoboro, won the 11 to 12 girls division with 792 points. Gabe Lash, of Waldoboro, placed third in the age 7 to 8 division with 493 points.
Also qualifying for sectionals were Cole Wallace, of Waldoboro; Aubrey Schaeffer, of Rockport; and Maddy White, of Waldoboro.
Jameson, White, and Powell had their overall scores compared against other sectional participants throughout New England for a chance to participate in the MLB team competition in Boston. Jameson punched her ticket and will participate at Fenway Park on May 31 for a chance to compete at the MLB All-Star Game in Minneapolis, Minn.
Waldoboro Recreation Director Kyle Santheson said “It’s always a pleasure to see the kids from the Waldoboro area perform so well.” In the last seven years, five youngsters from the Waldoboro area, including Isaac Durkee, Nicholas DePatsy, Brett Collamore, Cassie Smeltzer, and Maty Moore have participated at the New England-wide team competition at Fenway Park in Boston.
