Medomak Valley girls’ basketball team ended their 23 year curse Tuesday night with a win over Herman in an East Class B preliminary game at Medomak Valley. With the win, the Lady Panthers earn a berth in the Eastern Maine Class B tournament in Bangor. The last time Medomak girls played in the Bangor Auditorium was in 1986, under coach George Gould. Medomak plays play #3 Presque Isle at the Bangor Auditorium on Fri., Feb. 13 at 5 p.m.
“Obviously we are very excited to be playing in Bangor Friday afternoon,” Medomak coach Randy Hooper said. “It has been a total team effort all year long and we are looking forward to playing Presque Isle.”
The Hawks ran with the Panthers in first quarter action, trailing 14-13 at the break. Medomak pulled away from Herman in the second period to lead 32-18 at the half. Danielle Dyer opened the second frame with back to back 3-pointers and Mariah Jenkins converted off the glass for a nine point Panther lead. Herman twice cut the lead to eight, before Medomak rattled off seven straight. Lacy Massengale crashed the glass for two, Dyer connected at the line for a three point play and Lindsay Ranquist scored off the offensive glass in the rally to give the Panthers a 15 point lead.
The Panthers slowed the game down at the end of the second and into the third quarter, holding a 41-26 lead going into the final period. Medomak out paced the Hawks 20-16 in the fourth, led by Ericka Christensen with eight points.
Scoring for Medomak were Dyer 15, (3-3’s,3R,3S), Christensen 10 (7R), Massengale 8 (3R), Ranquist 8 (7R,2A), Erika Knutson 6, Jenkins 4, Erica Tolman 4 (3R) and Nicole Weaver 2. Scoring for Herman were Ashley Thayer 9, Erin Arnold 8, Katie Durgin 6, Marissa Kelley 5, Ripley King 4, Dani Ross 3, Carmen Nickerson 3, Lily Barry 2 and Victoria Davenport 2.
