Medomak Valley boys’ basketball team crushed Erskine Academy 47-28 on Feb. 11 in East Class B preliminary action at Medomak. The win earns the Panthers a berth in the East B tournament at the Bangor Auditorium. The Panthers out rebounded the Eagles 37-18 in the win.
After a slow start, the Panthers clawed their way to a 20-13 lead at the half. Steven Wight opened scoring for the Eagles with a 3-pointer. Medomak tied the score on a Daniel Aubel foul shot and Kevin Fogg basket. Wight hit two at the line to give Erskine a two point lead. Medomak scored the final six points of the first to take a 9-5 lead at the break.
Erskine tied the score twice in the second period, before the Panthers went on a 9-2 run to take the lead for good, and go into the half with a seven point lead. Dale Winchenbach fed Fogg with 3:40 to go in the half to give the Panthers the lead for good. Winchenbach leaped out of bounds to save the ball and set up a shot from Alex MacKenzie. Aubel hit a pair at the line and Winchenbach hit a three in the rally.
Wight scored the first hoop of the third to cut the lead to five. Winchenbach answered with another three and Aubel crashed the glass for two to give Medomak a double digit lead. Erskine cut the lead to six, but Medomak scored eight straight. Caleb Guistra converted off the boards, Alex Goldrup hit a three, Winchenach scored on a Goldrup feed and MacKenzie scored one at the line. Medomak went into the fourth with a 33-20 lead.
Medomak out scored Erskine 14-8 in the final frame to win by 19. Aubel scored eight in the period, with MacKenzie picking up three assists.
Scoring for Medomak were Aubel 15 (5R,1S), Goldrup 9 (6R,2S,3A), Winchenbach 8 (6s,4A), MacKenzie 7 (16R,3S,1B,4A), Fogg 4, Taylor Williamson 2 and Guistra 2 (5R,1S). Scoring for Erskine were Wight 9 (2R,4S), Garrett Holt 8 (3R,2B), Tyler Harvey 6 and Nick Grady 5 (5R).
