Medomak Valley JV girls’ basketball team wrapped up their 2008-09 season with a perfect 17-0 record. This is the first time in the school’s history at Medomak Valley that a JV girls’ team has gone undefeated.
“Fortunately we were able to play all players in every game and not lose our competitive edge. I feel the girls were well prepared for every game and most challenges they faced. Our strength was our pressure defense and transition game. We were able to keep teams guessing as to what we were going to do next. Keeping opponents off balance was a key,” coach Larry Jensen said.
The Lady Panthers were led in scoring by Nicole Peterson, Roxanne Jelenfy, Morgan Baum, Vanessa Davis and Ashley Rackligg; led in rebounding by Kayla Santheson, Jelenfy, Baum, Kelsi Severson and Kelley Leidenroth; led in assists by Davis, Mallory Conary, Baum, Santheson and Rackliff; and led in steals by Severson, Jelenfy, Conary, Rackliff and Peterson.
“Team success depends on the complete involvement of every team member in all aspects of the game. Every member plays such an important role. It’s not all about starting the game, it’s about who’s on the floor when we’re making a run at the other team or in practice pushing each other to be better than the next person.
“The games are won and lost on the practice floor. This is where the teaching of the game takes place and preparing for as many game-like situations as possible so that it becomes second nature to the individuals and it’s only a reaction as to what needs to be done on the floor at what point in time,” Jensen said, adding.
“I have tried to create as competitive a team as I could. I hope it’s been fun and a great learning experience. I have strived to show them that hard work will pay off and to not expect hand-outs.
“I hope that they have learned some life lessons along the way, to respect people, the value of discipline, and dedication, and the joy and rewards that come with it. And most of all, I hope they had fun.
“They need to keep learning, keep playing in order to keep the program headed in the right direction. I have seen them learn new skills and improve upon their existing skills.
“They need to keep learning, and grasp an understanding of the game. When this happens, to see the success upon their faces is my reward,” Jensen commented.
