Medomak Valley boys basketball team trailed by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, before rallying to beat Lincoln Academy 53-44 Dec. 18 in Newcastle. The Panthers ended the fourth quarter with a 9-2 run, including sinking seven of eight foul shots in the final 1:41 to play to pull out an eight point win.
The Panthers jumped out to a 7-2 lead on two hoops from Colton Spear and three foul shots from Nicholas DePatsy. The Eagles soared back to take a 10-9 lead at the quarter break on a half court shot from Brady Leeman at the buzzer.
Lincoln was red hot in the second frame, scoring 19 points while holding Medomak to eight. Devin Scherer, Travis Creamer and Sawyer Pinkham hit big threes in the rally. The Eagles out rebounded the Panthers 9-4 in the frame to take a 29-17 lead into the halftime break.
The third period belonged to the Panthers, who outscored the Eagles 19-7 to tie the game 36-36 going into the final frame. Eagle Cody Tozier scored on a Creamer feed to open the quarter and give Lincoln a 14 point lead.
The Eagle’s shooting hands turned to ice under tough Panther defense. Medomak went on a 16-2 scoring run to pull within two. Brady Leeman and Jackson Vail exchanged threes, before the third period scoring ended with Medomak sinking two foul shots to knot the score.
Nicholas DePatsy tied up Sawyer Pinkham. Pinkham turned away from DePatsy, but DePatsy held onto the ball and both boys crashed to the floor. Pinkham wanted a foul call for DePatsy’s arm being across his throat, but got slapped with a technical foul instead. DePatsy went to the line and sank both shots to tie the game 36-36 after three.
The Eagles sent Medomak to the line early in the fourth quarter, and the Panthers made good on three of six shots to take a three point lead. Eagle B. Leeman knotted the score with his third 3-pointer of the night. DePatsy made good at the line for a three point play and Spear scored on a Zach Starr feed to put Medomak up by five. Creamer hit a three to cut the lead to two. Lincoln was forced to foul, and the Panthers netted seven of eight to seal the win.
Lincoln sank seven of eight foul shots in the game led by Devin Scherer (6/6). Medomak sank 19 of 24 foul shots, led by DePatsy (12/15).
Scoring for Medomak were DePatsy 20 (5R,2A,5S), Spear 12 (6R,3S), Cameron Allarie 9 (11R,3B), Noah Beck 5 (3R), Micah Williamson 4 (4R,3A), and Jackson Vail 3 (2S).
Scoring for Lincoln were Scherer 15 (10R,2A,1B), B. Leeman 11, Creamer 8 (3R), Pinkham 5 (3R,4S), Tozier 4 (4R,2A,2S,5B), and Kobe Lincoln 1. Cole Leeman added (4R,2A,1B).
