District 2 champions Medomak Valley 10&11 all-stars beat Bangor West 13-12 in the opening game of the Maine State Little League championships in Millinocket on Saturday. Medomak lost to Scarborough 15-0 on Sunday and Saco 9-6 on Monday.
With the win, Medomak made it to the Maine state single-elimination championship series. They will play undefeated Scarborough at 5 p.m., Wednesday, July 29.
Medomak 13 – Bangor 12
Ethan Reed, Jake Bickmore, Anthony York, and Garrett Hutchins pitched in the win over Bangor on July 25.
Medomak scored six runs in the second inning. Garrett Hutchins walked and scored on a Jake Bickmore triple. Ian Doughty hit an RBI single. Isaiah Staples singled and Zeke Hesseltine singled. Hesseltine scored on a wild pitch.
They added three in the third. Doughty and Staples singled and scored on a passed ball and wild pitch. Bickmore drove in Hutchins on an error.
Medomak added two runs in the fifth. Hutchins walked and scored on an Ethan Reed double. Anthony York drove home Reed with a single.
Bangor scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead. Down 12-11 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, Ian Doughty singled and scored on a Zach Winpenny double to tie the game. Winpenny scored the game winner on a walk-off single from Hutchins.
Hitting for Medomak were Winpenny with two doubles and two singles, Reed a double and two singles, Isaiah Staples two singles, Bickmore a triple, and York, Hutchins, and Hesseltine a single each.
Hitting for Bangor were Gavin Young with a double and single, Connor Prouty a triple, Joey Morrison and Cooper Ryan a double each, and Max Clair, Jack Parron, and Cole Neal a single each.
Scarborough 15 – Medomak 0
Frink (3I,1B,2H,6K) and Kelly (3K,1H) delivered four shutout innings on the mound to lead Scarborough to a 15-0 four-inning mercy-ruling win over Medomak on Sunday. Steady mist fell throughout the game, which was moved up an hour due to impending rain.
Zach Starr took the loss for Medomak (2 2/3I,1K,3B,5H,8R), and Bickmore (0K,4B,2H,6R) and Doughty (1/3I, 1H,1K,1R) pitched in relief.
Scarborough was powered at the plate by Frink, who hit a two-run home run in the second and a two-run single in the third.
Medomak defensive highlights included catcher Hutchins throwing out O’Brien trying to steal second in the second inning, Evan Mariano made a great catch in right field in the first inning, and Starr caught a line drive back to the mound in the third. Medomak had just one error in the loss against the hard-hitting Scarborough team.
Hitting for Medomak were York with a bunt single in the second, Hutchins a single in the third, and Starr a single in the fourth, Frink a home run and single, Sam Clark a double and single (2RBI), Peter O’Brien two singles, and T.J. Liponis, Ryan Gambardella (2RBI), and Joseph Townsend (2RBI) a single each.
Saco 9 – Medomak 6
Saco rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth on three errors to beat Medomak 9-6 on Monday. Saco jumped out to a 4-0 lead, including scoring three runs in the first on back-to-back RBI doubles to Christian Schaffer and Kyle Sawyer. Schaffer walked in Wyatt Light in the second.
Medomak got on the boards with two runs in the third. Zach Winpenny reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a Jake Bickmore triple off the right field fence. Bickmore came home on a wild pitch.
Saco added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-2 lead. Schaffer walked and scored when Sawyer reached on an error. Sawyer scored on a single to Liam Robbins.
Medomak rallied for four runs on four hits in the top of the fifth to tie the game 6-6. With two outs, Winpenny and Hutchins hit singles and both scored on a Bickmore triple. Bickmore scored on a passed ball. Ethan Reed smashed a triple and scored on a throwing error to the infield on the play.
Saco rallied in the home half of the fifth for three runs, then shut Medomak down in the sixth to win. Anthony Jones, Mike McLeed, and Rohner reached on errors. Jones scored on a throwing error, McLeed on a wild pitch, and Rohner on a Sawyer ground out.
Hitting for Medomak were Bickmore with two triples (3RBI), Reed a triple, and Winpenny and Hutchins a single each. Hitting for Saco were McLeed two singles, Schaffer and Sawyer a double each, and Rohner, Robbins, Blaise Fournier, and Wyatt Light a single each.
