Midcoast North defeated Midcoast South 7-5 Monday night in Bath to claim the District 2 championships and advance to the state tournament. Rocky Faunce collected the win and Billy Joyce the save (1B, 1H). Relief pitcher Jason Weatherbee (5I, 3R, 0K, 2H, 1HP, 2B) took the loss, Geno Wentworth got the start (1I, 2B, 4H, 0K, 4R), and Buddy Simmons pitched one inning in relief (1H).
North took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning when Ian Cushing reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on an Adam Landwehr sacrifice. South scored two in the home half of the inning. Bryant Matthew hit a lead off single, stole second, and came home on a throwing error. Brandon Reilly walked and scored on a Merritt Wotton single.
North plated four runs in the 2nd to take the lead for good. Tony Campagnoli hit a single and Kyle Olehnik and Joyce RBI doubles, Sam Predham reached on a bunt error, and Adam Landwehr hit a two run double. North added a run in the 4th on an RBI single to Landwehr, scoring Predham.
South scored two in the 6th to pull within two. Everett Martin hit a lead off triple and scored on a throwing error. Ryan Peters doubled and scored on a Matthew single.
North scored one in the top of the 7th on a walk to Ian Cushing and scored on a Joe Nelsen single.
South’s rally fell short in the home half of the 7th. Reilly walked and scored on a Martin single. Martin tried to score from first on a Bo McLain single, but was gunned down at the plate for the final out.
Hitting for South were Martin a triple and single, Matthew and McLain two singles each, Peters a double, and Reilly and Wotton a single each. Hitting for North were Landwehr a double and single, Olehnik and Joyce a double each, and Predham, Campagnoli and Nelsen a single each.
Brandon Reilly gave South a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning when he reached on a single and scored on a Jason Weatherbee single. A. Flanagan walked and scored in the bottom of the inning to tie the score. C. Merry reached on an error and scored for North in the 2nd. South tied the score in the top of the 3rd when B. Matthews reached on an error and scored on a Reilly single. T. Campagnoli singled and scored in the 3rd to give North the lead.
South plated three runs in the 5th to take a 5-3 lead. Matthews and Adam Lynch singled, Reilly hit a triple and Weatherbee a single in the rally. North tied the score in the bottom of the 5th on an error, walk and single to B. Joyce. Merry scored the winning run in the 6th after hitting a lead off triple.
Reilly took the loss for MC South (10K, 3B, 4H). Relief pitcher Joyce (1K, 1BH, 0B) collected the win, and Landwehr got the start (5I, 8K, 0B, 7H, 5R).
Hitting for MC South were Reilly with a double and two singles, Weatherbee two singles, and Matthews, Lynch and Everett Martin a single each. Hitting for MC North was Merry with a triple, and Predham, Campagnoli, Joyce with a single each.
South scored two runs in the 1st when Reilly doubled, Merritt Wotton walked and Simmons drove two runs in on an error. Simmons scored the 3rd run. They added two runs in the 2nd.
Martin walked and scored on a Lynch single, and Lynch came home on a Weatherbee single. Martin singled home Wotton and Bo McLain in the 3rd. Reilly and Wotton singled in the 4th and scored on a single to Simmons and sacrifice to McLain. Weatherbee and Wotton drew walks in the 5th and scored on back-to-back singles to Simmons and McLain to end the game early.
Hitting for South were Reilly with a double and single, Simmons two singles, Weatherbee and Wotton a double each, and McLain, Martin, Geno Wentworth and Lynch a single each. Hitting for Ararat were Pinette and Daigle with a single each.
MC South 5 – Lisbon 0
Geno Wentworth (6I, 4K, 0B, 3H) and Weatherbee (1K) combined to shutout Lisbon 5-0 on July 18. Lisbon had just three base runners in the game, and all were gunned down, one on a double play in the 1st inning, one by catcher Wotton at second and one picked off at second by Wentworth.
MC South scored two runs in the 1st on singles to Matthews, Reilly and Wotton. They added a run in the 3rd when Ryan Peters walked and scored on a Weatherbee single. South scored two more in the 4th on two errors and a double to Matthews.
Hitting for MC South were Matthews with a double and single, Reilly two singles, and Weatherbee, Wotton, Simmons, Leeman, Martin and Wentworth a single each. Hitting for Lisbon were Pelletier, Frazier and Durphy with a single each.
MC South 9 – Brunswick 2
Simmons (6I, 2R, 5K, 2B, 4H) collected the win in game four, and Weatherbee the save (1I, 1H, 1B).
MC South took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st on a single to Matthews, walk to Weatherbee, RBI sacrifice to Reilly and RBI single to Wotton. Brunswick tied the score in the bottom of the inning, before MC South took the lead for good with one run in the 2nd on a single to Lynch and RBI single to Matthews.
Simmons singled in the 5th and scored on a single to Martin. South added four runs in the 6th on a walk to Peters, singles to Matthews and Weatherbee, a double to Wotton and a single to Simmons.
Hitting for MC South were Simmons with four singles, Matthews three singles, Wotton a double, and Weatherbee, Reilly, Martin and Peters a single each. Hitting for Brunswick were Anderson with two and Lancaster and Brunn one each.
North took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 2nd on singles to Flanagan and Campagnoli. South tied the score in the top of the 4th. Weatherbee doubled and scored on a Reilly sacrifice. South scored the winning run in the 5th when Wotton walked and scored on a Simmons double.
Hitting for South were Weatherbee with a double and single, Simmons a double and Wotton and Leeman a single each. Hitting for North were Nelson, Flanagan, Campagnoli and Merry with a single each.
