Newcastle Babe Ruth defeated Waldoboro 4-1 in a classic pitcher’s duel Tuesday night in Bristol. Stephen Quinlan (3H, 3K, 1B) collected the win in six innings of work and Brandon Reilly (3K) the save. Buddy Simmons took the loss for Waldoboro (6H, 6B, 3K).
Waldoboro took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning when Chris Poulin was caught in a pickle between third and home and scored on an error. Waldoboro held a 1-0 lead until the 5th inning, when Newcastle bats erupted for four runs. Quinlan walked, Dalton Leeman singled and Reilly walked to set up a two run single to Merritt Wotton. Bo McLain reached on a fielder’s choice and Brandon Bonney smashed a two run double.
Waldoboro threatened in the 7th with singles from John Murray and Timmy Farrar. Reilly came on in relief with two runners on and no outs, and struck out the side.
Hitting for Newcastle were Mitchell Wotton with two singles, Bonney a double and Leeman, Merritt Wotton and Casey Poland a single each. Hitting for Waldoboro were Simmons, Murray, and Farrar with a single each.
