Oak Hill defeated Wiscasset 4-3 in eight innings in their Mt. Valley Conference season finale in make-up action June 4 in Wiscasset. The Raiders’ winning run in the top of the eighth inning came on a controversial play, that saw Jonah Martin hit what looked like a routine ground ball to the infield.
Martin, who was clearly running inside the line, cleaned out Wolverine first baseman Daren Wood. With Wood rolling on the ground, writhing in pain, Jake Bannister scored from first base for the winning run on the play.
Tyler Bailey started for Wiscasset (5I,3R,2K,2B,3H) and Matt Craig took the loss in relief (3I,1R,2B,1K,1HP). Matt Arnold pitched six innings for the Raiders (4H,1R,2K). Bannister collected the win (3I,2R,2K, 1HP,2H).
Wiscasset took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Wood singled and scored on a Conlan Ranta single. The Raiders tied the game in the third when Conor Nilson reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on an Adam Merrill single.
Oak Hill plated two runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Kaleb Morressette walked and scored on a Adam Mooney single. Mooney came home on a Merrill sacrifice fly.
Wiscasset rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. Matt Craig was hit by a pitch, Wood reached on an error, and Ranta singled to load up the bases for a two run double to Reed.
Bannister was hit by pitch in the top of the eighth inning, and scored when Martin reached on the freak play for the winning run.
Hitting for Wiscasset were Ranta with a double and two singles, Reed a double, and Tyler Flavin and Wood a single each. Hitting for Oak Hill were Merrill, Martin, Therrien, Mooney, and Nilson a single each.
