Medomak Valley softball team’s bid to return to their third straight East B title game came to a screeching halt on June 10 in a quarterfinal match-up against fifth seed Old Town.
The Pride took advantage of two 7th inning errors to score two runs to tie the score and force an extra inning. Old Town scored the winning run in the top of the 8th when Amy Singer singled, went to third on a throwing error that went out of play, and with two outs, scored on a throwing error on a passed ball for a 5-4 Old Town win.
The Panthers made five errors in the game. “We’re a young team, and experience wise, we are very young,” first year coach Richard Vannah said. Medomak loses just two players to graduation, Jessica Koon and starting pitcher Kayla Santheson. The Panthers stranded 10 base runners in the loss, including leaving the bases loaded in the 4th and two runners on in the 6th.
Medomak took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning. Heidi Obuchon singled, Kayla Santheson walked and both scored on a Kasey Benner triple to left field.
Old Town pulled within one in the 2nd. Lead off batter Singer smashed a solo homerun over the right field fence. Whitney Leland reached on an error and scored on an Emily Trembley double.
Medomak scored one run in the 6th to take a 4-2 lead. Alanna Vose walked, went to third on passed balls and scored on a Vanessa Davis single.
Three outs away from a victory, the Lady Panthers were rattled in the top of the 7th. Annie Cashon reached on an error, moved over on a Micayla Hussey single and scored on Megan Cousins’ sacrifice ground out. Hussey came home to tie the score when Amy Cossar reached on an error.
Hannah Morin collected the win (8K,8H,6B) and Santheson took the loss (5K,6H,1B).
Hitting for Medomak were Benner with a triple and single, Davis 2 singles, Obuchon, Mallory Conary, Jessica Koon and Amanda Hendrickson-Belloquet a single each. Hitting for Old Town were Singer a homerun and single, Morin and Trembley a double each, and Cousins and Hussey a single each.
