The first annual Dustin Osier Memorial 5K, held at Medomak Valley High School Saturday morning, was a great success, with 49 walkers and runners participating.
“This was a great fundraiser and all the credit goes to those who did the detail work to get it done. It was a true celebration of Dustin and what he still means to all of us,” MVHS cross-country coach George Gould said.
Monies raised from the 5K go to the Dustin Osier Memorial Scholarship Fund.
In the past five years, since Osier’s tragic death in a vehicle accident, the Dustin Osier Memorial Scholarship Committee has awarded over $23,000 in scholarship money to Medomak Valley High School graduates.
Fundraising started with an alumni basketball game in 2011. For the past three years, a memorial horseshoe tournament has been held. Organizer Missy Dean estimates 30 to 40 people participated in this year’s tournament, held on June 20.
“Marcie Creamer did a phenomenal job organizing the (5K), along with George Gould. We had great volunteers and support in memory of Dustin,” Dean said. “The Osiers are my best friends,” she said of why she became involved in raising money for the Dustin Osier Memorial Scholarship Fund.
“We try to give everyone a scholarship that applies,” Dean said. The scholarships are awarded in a student’s second semester. Dean estimates scholarships have benefited an average of 20 kids a year. “We are so passionate about it,” Dean said.
