Nearly 220 runners and walkers braved the rain and wind Saturday morning to participate in the 10th annual Strawberry Shortcake Shuffle 5K. Neither downed trees and limbs or downed power lines, stopped the event that benefited Healthy Kids.
“We did not have the walk-ins we usually have,” Healthy Kids staff member Lucy Smith said. “This year’s turnout was very good. It would have been much higher if the weather was with us. It was an amazing success, despite the weather. People came out to support us.”
Drenched finishers were rewarded with a strawberry shortcake. Over 19 dozen biscuits, 70 quarts of strawberries and 10 quarts of whipped cream were served up in the Great Salt Bay Community School cafeteria.
The event brought in $6,000, including sponsorships for Healthy Kids. Funds raised will help Healthy Kids runs programs, including parenting workshops, supervised visitation, classes at Two Bridges Regional Jail, and school programs
like Baby Think It Over classes.
In the Baby Think It Over classes, Healthy Kids uses different dolls that demonstrate how drugs affect babies, affects of fetal alcohol syndrome, and a doll with a clear head that demonstrates what happens to an infant’s brain when a baby is shaken.
“It is pretty graphic, but effective,” Smith said.

Tom Abello, 40, of Edgecomb, was the overall winner in a time of 18:47. Shannon Uleymik, 20 of Derwoud, Mo., was the female overall winner in 21:32.
