The scoreboard incorrectly had Boothbay ahead 51-50, instead of 53-50. With two seconds to play, Wiscasset in-bounded the ball, completed two passes and Daren Wood let loose on a long ball that sailed through the net before the buzzer sounded.
Wiscasset boys celebrated what they thought was a win (but what would have been a tie and sent the game into a second overtime). The celebration was short lived, as officials met at the scorers’ table after a Boothbay coach protested.
The officials decided the scorekeeper was slow to start the clock and that Wiscasset did not have enough time to bring the ball up the court and get the shot off, so they called the basket “no good” and handed the win to Boothbay.
The unsatisfying ending to a terrific game soured the superb efforts of both teams. Wiscasset led 14-8 at the quarter break, and 20-14 at the half. Boothbay scored the first eight points of the third period to take the lead. Travis Padilla recaptured the lead for Wiscasset and anchored an eight-point run to give Wiscasset a 30-26 lead at the end of three.
James Chamberlin scored the first two baskets of the fourth period to put the Warriors up by eight. John and Evan Hepburn pecked away at the lead to tie the score with 3:33 to play.
J. Hepburn gave the Warriors the lead with 3:10 to go. Padilla tied the game at the foul line and E. Hepburn scored to put Boothbay up by two. Dylan McMahon and Padilla scored to recapture the lead for Wiscasset. J. Hepburn tied the score at the line and E. Hepburn gave Boothbay the lead on a feed from Joseph DiMauro. Padilla tied the game on a McMahon pass to send the game into overtime.
Padilla and E. Hepburn traded hoops in overtime, before J. Hepburn drove inside to score and went to the line where he made one foul shot with two seconds to play.
