Twenty runners braved tropical storm Danny Saturday morning in the DRA Offroad 5K, a benefit for the Lincoln Academy swim team. Cold driving rain did not dampen the spirits of the runners competing on the beautiful grounds of DRA’s Salt Bay Farm.
Before the start of the race, runners were welcomed to the “Underwater 5K,” nicknamed because of the deluge. Darren Winchenbach, Waldoboro, won the race in 22:52, beating out Nick Smelcer by 2:21.
Nikki Leeman, Round Pond, and a member of Lincoln Academy’s cross-country team, placed third overall and was the first female finisher in 24:21. Katrina Belle was the second female finisher. LA cross-country’s team competed with nine runners, including coach BJ Russell.
LA swim team race organizers Majorie Severance and Katie Huntington were very pleased with the turnout, especially considering the extreme weather conditions.
“We thought it great that so many folks came out in the really rotten weather to run the course and help the LA swim team. It is a bit ironic that the land race was also like a swim meet what with all the rain,” Huntington said. Funds raised will go to help offset the expenses of the competitive team swimsuits for the swimmers.
