The Midcoast Ice Cats have named Mike Schroeder as the new head coach for the 2008-09 ice hockey season. Schroeder was introduced at a parent/player meeting Sunday afternoon at the MRC (Midcoast Recreation Center in West Rockport).
The Midcoast Ice Cats is a high school ice hockey club team open to players from area high schools that do not offer ice hockey as a varsity sport. “I’m extremely excited about the program and I’m looking forward to the upcoming season. The program is unique in that the players are from a variety of high schools ranging from Mount View to Lincoln Academy and everywhere in between. We have a number of returning players that have experience, talent, and the qualities necessary to be role models and team leaders. In addition, we have a great facility in which to play and a great group of supporters.” Schroeder said.
Schroeder is no stranger to the game of hockey and competitive sports, having served as the director of coaching for the MCSA and as the head coach of a number of youth teams. He also started the MCSA girls’ ice hockey program and is a USA hockey certified official.
As a native of Pennsylvania, he played youth and junior hockey at the venerable Hershey Arena. He is a graduate of Temple University in Philadelphia, where he was a member of the Owl’s Division-1, East Coast Conference Championship tennis teams in 1980 and 1981.
He is currently the Graphic Communications Instructor at the Mid Coast School of Technology in Rockland, after spending 18 years in the publishing field as a creative director.
Schroeder adds, “I actually prefer this team dynamic to a conventional high school program in that it gives us the opportunity to create our own hockey culture as well as standards and values that aren’t reflective of just one school. This year’s team will have a new philosophy, a new look, and win or lose, we will play the game by a set of guiding principles that reflect the best qualities of the schools, parents, and students involved.”
The Midcoast Ice Cats Hockey Club is in its third season and is open to all boys and girls Grades 9 through 12.
The team includes students from the following high schools: Rockland, Medomak Valley, Georges Valley, Lincoln Academy, Belfast Area, Searsport, Mount View, alternative schools and home schooled students.
The Ice Cats Hockey Club is a competitive high school ice hockey team. Their game schedule consists of regional, class B, and high school JV ice hockey programs.
Local athletes playing for the Ice Cats include Lincoln Academy’s Sam Stone and Patrick Hazeltine, and Medomak Valley’s Yannick Price-Prevot, and Morganne Price-Prevot.
